The Island of Elba is not just about sea, sun and beach, on the territory are located numerous historical locations, monuments, fortresses, castles, churches and museums to visit. Almost every population that has lived on the island has left it footprint on it and today this heritage is preserved in archaeological sites, museums, villas, libraries, art galleries. Some of the most interesting locations to visit are:

  • Castello del Volterraio, a castle dominating the rocky spur of Portoferraio and that you can see even from the ferry. It is the most ancient fortress of the island of Elba which origins dates back to the Etruscans and the only one that has never been conquered by pirates in the whole Mediterranean Sea.
  • Forte Stella, a fortress in Portoferraio that together with Torre della Linguella and Forte Falcone represents one of the best preserved complex of the Medici family in the island.
  • Mineral Museum in Rio Marina, in which is exposed a beautiful collection of circa 1000 examples of rock and minerals collected in the mineral valley of the island since the 60s. There is even a room dedicated to original clips of the time.
  • Archeological Museum of Linguella, that preserve some etruscan and roman findings coming from all over the Tuscan Archipelago. These objects are a testimony of the important role of the islands in the commercial traffic in the Mediterranean Sea.
